In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the grievances raised by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was finalized.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was dissolved.
Broader Government Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
